Tokyo International Gallery (Shinagawa, Tennozu) is pleased to present “UTSUROI,” a two-person exhibition by two up-and-coming artists, Mana Kawamura and Yuan Fangzhou.

Tokyo International Gallery (Shinagawa, Tennoz) is pleased to announce “UTSUROI” a two-person exhibition by two up-and-coming artists, Mana Kawamura and Yuan Fangzhou.

Having studied Japanese language and literature, Mana Kawamura is interested in the nature of words that change their meanings depending on the context and recipient, and creates paintings based on scenes, motifs, and texts from modern Japanese literature.

Yuan Fangzhou focuses on the relationship between people, things, and nature, and based on his own philosophy influenced by Eastern thought such as post-minimalism and Buddhism, he develops works that intersect multiple media and techniques, such as sculpture, painting, and video, mainly using glass materials.

When they considers “form” as not merely an external form of something, but as “the manifestation of something inside,” and that inside is invisible human memories and emotions such as Japanese literature and Eastern thought, as well as the invisible power of nature, what kind of message can viewers receive from the “form” they are seeing? What kind of message can the viewer receive from the “forms” he or she sees?

The interpretation of the “forms” embodied in Kawamura’s works, which are a complex combination of many factors such as the language and literature used in her works, the intellectual background and emotions of the ideas Yuan focuses on, and the mysterious power of nature, will differ depending on the viewpoint and experience of each individual, and the meaning and feeling will be different for each viewer. The meaning and feeling of the “form” will differ depending on the viewpoint and experience of each individual viewer.

We hope you will enjoy this exhibition, which allows you to experience the transitions of time through the changing perception of words in different eras, and the changes in materials shaped by time.
